International Biodiversity Day: At Valombreuse Garden, nature is alive

May 22nd marks International Biodiversity Day, established by the United Nations to raise global awareness about protecting living organisms. This day serves as a reminder that biodiversity is essential for our balance: food, climate, pollination, water quality, and health all directly depend on natural ecosystems.

In Guadeloupe, this theme takes on a special significance. The archipelago is home to exceptional tropical biodiversity, comprising plants, insects, birds, and endemic species that contribute to the balance of natural environments.

In Petit-Bourg, and more specifically at the Valombreuse Garden, this biodiversity is part of daily life. Every stroll offers the chance to discover plant species from the tropical world, and also to better understand their role in ecosystems.

A botanical garden at the heart of tropical biodiversity

With its plant collections, remarkable trees, and tropical blooms, the Valombreuse Garden is much more than just a place for a stroll. The park contributes to promoting and raising awareness about plant biodiversity in Guadeloupe.

Certain plants in the garden play an essential role for pollinators and small animals living in tropical natural spaces. Visitors can discover theHellenia speciosa, also known as Shell Ginger, the famous Annatto, the Nutmeg tree, the Cocoa tree or the spectacular Jade Vine.

The garden also hosts tropical ornamental species such as the Bougainvillea, the Brazilian Rose, theFloral Pineapple or the Spathiphyllum, which contribute to the park's rich landscape.

Why preserve plant biodiversity?

We often talk about endangered animal species, but plant biodiversity is just as essential. Plants produce oxygen, help regulate the climate, limit soil erosion, and provide food and shelter for many species.

Without pollinators and without plant diversity, ecosystems become more fragile. Preserving gardens, tropical forests, and natural spaces is therefore essential to maintain this balance.

The Valombreuse Garden educates visitors about these issues through its botanical collections and natural spaces. Observing a bloom, discovering a medicinal plant, or understanding the role of pollinating insects helps reconnect both children and adults with nature.

Discovering biodiversity in Guadeloupe

At the Valombreuse Garden, biodiversity is explored through an immersive experience in the heart of Guadeloupean nature.

Observing blooms, recognizing different species, listening to birds, or understanding the role of pollinators helps reconnect both children and adults with nature.

This International Biodiversity Day is an opportunity to remember that protecting living things often starts with something simple: learning more about what surrounds us. Because we always protect better what we understand.
